Alright. A domain. Exciting, yes. But what.. uh... how... hmmmm. :hack:

I have several forums that I want to transfer to the domain. And I have no idea how I go about doing that. I'm thinking that I'd better just scrap the forums, because they are less than a few months old, and start anew. (Their sort of screwed over anyway.) Would this make it any easier to simply create new boards and have them start "life" on the new domain right from the start? I hear from their support forum that a few key features are lost after a forum is moved. So I thought if it's "born" on the proper domain in the first place, all features would work.

I have a source at free power boards, and while I like the admin control panel interface, as they are at the moment, the boards are pretty darned slow. (You can say "darned" on the internet, can't cha?) The whole idea about getting a domain was so that the boards would be faster. Would this solve my problem? Or am I just wasting money this way?

Finally, if I create the new replacement forums on my own domain, does this alter any of the services that they would provide, like updates, alternative board themes, and mods? And would it kill the stinkin' spam/ads that they put on them?

Any help in this matter would be most helpful. And Wolfie would be very appreciative.

I tried to PM back, but you're not recieving messages. :( Thanks for the offer. And I'd like to pile a bit more sand on that hatchet, K?

(Wolfie runs off, and a few moment's later the start-up of heavy machinery is heard. Wolfie's at the controls of a front-end loader. and dumps a few dozen sq. yards on the hatchet. while Viking steps back a few feet.)

There... That aughtta do it. Want to learn about the domain? Click this out...

If it works for you - Cool!

Yahoo just ticks me off. The worst thing AT&T did was go with Yahoo as their portal interface IMHO. Semi-decent webmail interface - I avoid dealing with it with Outlook fortunately.

I just couldn't bring myself to get a domain registry through Yahoo. I've had good luck with GoDaddy...

So far they have been reasonably effective and efficient at taking care of me and my domain names.
Network Solutions has too - but at a premium price. :(

A domain is NOT a server or a website. It's a URL that you can attach to a website hosted on a server of your choosing.

So whether it will be faster really depends on your choice of server provider, and whether the provider gives you dedicated [best], virtualiised [next best], or shared server. Nothing to do with the 'domain' itself.

Finally, if I create the new replacement forums on my own domain, does this alter any of the services that they would provide, like updates, alternative board themes, and mods? And would it kill the stinkin' spam/ads that they put on them?

That really depends on the provider of your board software. For example, if the board software and hosting is free, they may be recovering their costs by placing ads on your boards. On the other hand, by wanting to host your board on a domain and server of your own, they may require you to pay for a software board license. (Without knowing where your boards are now, and the software used, it's impossible to give further advice).

Any help in this matter would be most helpful. And Wolfie would be very appreciative.

My 'help' such as it is, is that you haven't really entered into this transaction before really understanding upfront about what is involved. :P

Well, I got the domain name, and that's a start. And yeah, I might not of known what a crack my tail has gotten caught in. But I'm sure it's going to become a learning experience for me. Well, let's get the ship underway. I've been fartin' around in dry dock for far too long.

The domain advice? That's a problem. I've already gone to get the domain from Yahoo. And their pretty persnikety that the domain remain with Yahoo, for six months.

BUT, I'm not in any rush whatsoever. It can be built, then moved, and opened. During that time, I'll be working on the new forums. Trying to get some sort of basic set up going for each specialized purpose. Membership Permissions set-ups, page images, buttons, header images. (Good thing I know commercial arts. I'm going to depend on that a lot.) I want it to be a place where images, audio and video are common and easy for members to set up in their posts.

So as long as my existing forums are still limping along, I can create a new set of forums, and get those organized. So when it comes time to move the domain to another server, they'll be ready to open.

Thanks so much for the helpful advice and pointers. I'm especially looking forward to networking with the rest of the RCT forums. I hope I can bring something special to the RCT Community. And all help is especially appreciated.

Then dear friend, you will be greatly disappointed by the technical staff at whatever host you choose. Unless you maintain the server yourself or pay top dollar for specialized personal service, waiting four days for a response on a trouble ticket to get a problem resolved is NOT unusual. Especially with a free or low cost host.

If you are unaware of this important fact, you may not be suited to run a site/forum.
