I use all programs mentioned above (only just one anti-virus), but still another very useful one is 'HIjack this". Very user-friendly and small. Makes a report of what is starting up, which BHO's and active-x are installed, search pages, search bars, homepages etc. If you want you can command the prog to disable the things you want disabled, with a possibility to restore that later if you still seem to need it. Moreover, on the internet are tons of free sites that will help with pc-problems you cannot tackle, and many of them always say"" show me a report of HIjack this, so I can figure out what's wrong"and they give you detailed, step by step explanation how to tackle your problem. Great help!

I use Avg because it's free and there is always an upload so the program can't be out of day. I also use Zone Alarm wich there is no problem.

I've always wondered... does reformatting mean uninstalling windows completely and then reinstalling it again?

It means erasing your entire drive and reinstalling everything.

Spy bot (I thing that is what it is called) and Microsoft Anti-Spyware are also very good, and Free. Just Google it. However, you will need to show varification for the Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Of course, you do get what you pay for. If you want a high quality, definate search, Macafe (sp?) or Norton is very good.

Sorry to revive this old, old, old, topic but I have some VERY important info to share.

Lately, there has been some pop-ups floating around supposively download "Anti-Spyware/ Virus Protection" software on your computer. If for some reason, it does get installed on your computer, you need to get it off IMMEDIATELY.

Your best bet is to download "ewido" anti-spyware, from my point of view is THE BEST anti-spy program. Restart your computer, and press F8 repeativly when the little underscore is blinking. This will bring up the boot options menu. Choose using the arrow keys, and find your way to "Boot in Safe Mode" or something like it. Press the enter/return key to Boot in Safe Mode. It will look a tad bit "trippy" or strange to you. Also, it might change your screen resolution. For example, it might change a 800x600 resolution to a whatever other resolution.

Once you have booted in safe mode and can see your desktop, find ewido and run it. It will take about as much time as Norton Anti-Virus. Don't worry, let it run it's course. Follow it's directions, and your computer will be fine. After the scan is done, do a "Ctrl+alt, delete", and reboot your computer in normal mode (it will choose that automatically).

===

I hope this will help all of you at somepoint. Also, ewido Anti-Spy is an UNBELIEVABLE program, I highly recommend it to everyone.
