I know someone running RCT1,2 and 3 on Vista.

Say more. I could not get RCT 1 or 2 to run on Vista. I haven't tried RCT3.

Seems I misspoke with incomplete knowledge. He has a Vista machine, and runs all three. I just called him up to ask - and his answer was he has dual-boot and runs 1 & 2 in XP. He says he had issues with audio drivers, but got them resolved. I did not know the dual boot part.

My bad - I was not in possession of the full data set. :>

Maverick2007 over at the Atari Forums posted this information on how to get RCT (the original game) to work with Vista:

RollerCoaster Tycoon [Original and all Add-Ons] (Vista 32-bit)
- Add the "Windows 95" compatibility mode for the file "rct.exe"
- Add the "Full control" right to "Everyone" for the folder of RCT and its subfolders.

I haven't tried it myself yet, so can't confirm. I'm also not sure if running RCT2 in "Windows XP" compatibility mode and following the rest of the instructions will work or not for that. But...worth a try.

I am going to wait to get Vista until all the bugs can be worked out. From past experience from early adaptors is that any new OS from Microsoft will be buggy until the second edition comes out.

Even so - I'd still wait and get it pre-installed on a new machine. The vast majority of the problems are when people attempt to "upgrade" to Vista.

I noted today that Microsoft announced that they were pushing back by 6 months the date when they had intended to stop selling XP in most instances, and I heard that even Dell backed off a "Vista Only" policy on some of their laptops and desktop sales. Service pack One is slated for first quarter of next year, however we've been getting some fixes all the time.

I still only play RCT3 on the XP machine, the Vista machine is ok for pretty much everything else.

From what I have read in the local paper, Vista has finally received it's first service park tp patch up some of the many bugs in the OS.

Some fixes have already come in for anyone who uses the auto update feature.

I admit I'm still playing RCT3 on the XP machine only, never got past installed just the core game on the Vista machine. Part of the reason is that I'm finishing a RCT3 park and don't want to move files until it's done, also I'm making custom scenery and I have PSP8 installed on the old machine too, so it's the one I use the most of. Perhaps after the park is complete I'll try moving to the Vista machine again.

Sambo, it figures that running RCT1 and RCT2 on Vista is usually a dual OS setup. I am sure that alot of other games are going to be running that way until the change is fianlly complete where XP is no longer a reguirement to run them.
