Yah! On my new laptop with vista, RCT3 runs like a dream. (100x faster than my reg. computer with XP)

But 100% faster with only an Operating System change? I think not.

What else is different? Something besides the OS has to account for a doubling of speed.

i have vista on my laptop, (im on xp now, but i use the laptop for rct) and it is uselees. it takes ages to load, and according to the task manager is always using half my 1gb of ram!!! rct2 works ok, but on some larger parks you experience some lag. I am unsure of how rct3 works, as i uninstalled it while still on xp (i updated), due to the frequent lag and unrealistic feel of the game. So, if I were you i would stay well away from vista at the moment, and wait till microsoft iron out the niggles. :)

Okay maybe 100% of a change was a bit of exaguration  but is still makes my pc eat its dust. For example it doesn't take one minute for one frame of animation like it does when I try it on my laptop.

I've only gone as far as to install RCT3 Vanilla - without any patches - and it works fine.

I attempted to install the whole thing - expansions and all, but got nothing but errors (and yes, I followed the direction to the letter). The Vanilla game works fine with Vista...as-is. I quite frankly haven't felt like even messing around with it again to add the expansions, updates, custom scenery, or that pain-in-the-rear work-around to get billboards to work, so I continue to use our older XP computer to play RCT3, although I've messed with a Vanilla scenario or two just to test it out.

One new problem people are reporting is that after weeks of using custom scenery without problem, it suddenly disappears from the Style\Themed folder. This is also occuring with people's saved game files (no one's mentioned saved scenario files yet). This has been reported multiple times lately, so it's not just a case of someone moving a file by mistake. Also, some people have no problems with using their mouse in games with Vista...except when playing RCT3.

Well, I installed Vista at one time, thinking it's safe to quadruple-boot (vista, 2k3, XP, 98) but RCT2 ran as slow as ever on it. Even a different game on flash (which runs at round 15 milliseconds/frame in XP) ran really slow (around 45 milliseconds/frame). And my computer is pretty fast, but the ram wasn't upgraded at the time. Basically, I found that the best windows to run RCT2 on is Windows 2k3 server. It runs very smoothly, you won't notice any major bugs (unless you use sound, in which case you'll hear everything get sharper [the screams, the rollercoasters running, ect.] but that's it). And I tried to install a network printer on vista for someone else. *sigh* It didn't take too long (15 min), but it's a long process. But if you actually, direly want to get vista, at least get business or ultimate. Also, I found that turning aero off makes vista run smoother (no kidding here).

That would all make sense. RCT2 originally came out about the same time or shortly after XP was released, and it was based on RCT which was designed for 98. Of course RCT3 was designed for XP...however I also recall how we were told by Frontier that the game 'was ahead of it's time', and that as we ungraded in the years ahead to new computer the game would really shine!

It wasn't made for Vista

It wasn't made for dual core nor hyperthreading

It doesn't support some common widescreen screen resolutions.

It wasn't made for DirectX10.

What WAS made for vista? No one was ready for what vista offers.
Suggestions for the vista users: DOWNGRADE TO EITHER XP OR 2K3, IMMEDIATELY!!!! (sorry for shouting, but I had to get that out). RCT just won't work on server systems (like 2k3) but rct2 ... like a dream. Literally. I made some of my best coasters there.

RCT worked just fine on Server 2003 for me. I know someone running RCT1,2 and 3 on Vista.

I had difficulty setting up our networked printer on Vista - until I stopped forcing it to use drivers that work on XP and let the Install Wizard handle it. It recommended different drivers - I used those, it solved the problem and works like a champ.

 I'm sure all the people who have gotten RCT3 to work just fine on Vista are laughing their heads off at you right now for making such a statement...whether you 'had to get that out" or not.

These blanket statements just are not true. There's a huge number of people who are completely happy with RCT3 on Vista, just as there were huge numbers of people happy with RCT3 on XP, despite the problems some people experianced. What we CAN say is:

SOME (but most certainly not ALL) have no problems running Vista and RCT3.

SOME (but certainly not ALL) have no problems setting up the work-around for billboards

SOME (but certainly not ALL) have reported no further problems

SOME (but certainly not ALL) have reported performance improvement after switching to Vista. (I'll note that many people switch to Vista as the result of getting a new machine...other factors may be involved here besides just the o/s)

So your suggestion just doesn't hold water.

Again, game performance is influenced by a large number of factors, and the opertaing system is only just one of those factors. Two different people playing on the exact same machine are going to experiance different amounts of lag or other problems because they each play the game differently, and how you play is just as great a factor as the O/s is.
